Japanese society of orofacial pain
The Japanese Society of Orofacial Pain is an academic society established for the development of clinical medicine and basic research of orofacial pain. We dedicate ourselves in research to clarify the mechanisms of pain and put it into practice by exchanging our knowledge. The academic background of members who joined this society to investigate orofacial pain scientifically includes a wide range of specialty not only various fields of clinical dental medicine, but also psychosomatic medicine, clinical psychology and basic medicine. We currently have approximately 800 members. The Japanese Society of Orofacial Pain has two origins, one of which was the Society of Orofacial Pain and the other was the Japanese Academy of Orofacial Pain. In 2009, these two organizations merged to establish the Japanese Society of Orofacial Pain. In 2016, we received accreditation as a general incorporated association.
The strong point of our academic activities is characterized in our seminars and symposia that we hold 7 times per year. These academic events include the basic seminar for beginners that provides fundamental knowledge to start learning orofacial pain, the diagnosis seminar that provides various diagnostic tools including chairside examinations and the expert seminar that facilitates discussion on clinical cases to reach the final diagnosis. Every seminar is well designed for participants to learn sufficiently at their own knowledge level. We further offer following transdisciplinary seminars and symposium in collaboration with other medical and dental societies; the brain lab seminar that offers invaluable experiences, the Headache Academy for Dentists offered in collaboration with the Japanese Headache Society, the psychiatric medicine seminar that invites experts in this field to discuss actual cases, and the joint symposium on trigeminal neuropathic pain organized with related academic societies.. These events are pretty attractive and qualified, in which participants should experience distinguished contents. Moreover, we closely collaborate with related foreign academic societies and have international academic meetings and symposia periodically. Some members play a key role in these international societies and are frequently invited to provide a lecture.
